Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, the ValueJet pilot at the centre of the Abuja airport incident involving Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, has been identified, sparking a flurry of reactions online.

The incident, which has since gone viral, followed K1’s reported denial of boarding on ValueJet’s Flight VK 201 to Lagos. The airline cited his attempt to bring alcohol in a thermoflask onboard, an item prohibited by ValueJet’s safety regulations. According to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the singer allegedly ignored crew warnings and spilled alcohol on a staff member during the heated exchange.

Tensions escalated when a video emerged showing K1 walking dangerously close to the aircraft as it prepared for takeoff, narrowly avoiding the moving plane. The footage raised serious safety concerns and led to the suspension of both Captain Ogoyi and her co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba, pending an investigation into the incident.

Who is Captain Oluranti Ogoyi?

Popularly called Rantilicious by friends and colleagues, she is the daughter of former Osun Central senator Felix Kola Ogunwale, who served in the National Assembly between 2003 and 2007. With over a decade of experience in aviation, she began her flying career at Arik Air before joining ValueJet.

In September 2021, she was officially promoted to full captain, a milestone celebrated at a formal ceremony attended by top aviation figures, including the current NCAA Director General, Captain Chris Najomo. She is also married to fellow pilot Isaac Ogoyi Jr., who has worked with Arik Air, RwandAir, and currently flies with Uganda Airlines.

The revelation of Captain Ogoyi’s identity has stirred widespread commentary across social media platforms, with public figures like Isaac Fayose joining the debate. As investigations continue, the spotlight remains on airport safety protocols and the responsibilities of both crew and passengers in high-stress situations.
