Marcus Rashford has enjoyed a bright start to life at Barcelona, but his future on the pitch this season remains uncertain due to unresolved registration issues under La Liga’s financial rules.
The England international joined the Catalan giants this summer after a turbulent 2024 campaign that saw him lose form at Manchester United and make a short-lived loan move to Aston Villa in January. Now under the guidance of new Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, Rashford has been repositioned as a central striker, a role previously occupied by Robert Lewandowski, and even scored in a pre-season friendly against South Korean side Daegu on Monday.
Despite this strong showing, Rashford has yet to be officially registered to play in La Liga. Barcelona’s long-standing financial difficulties continue to hinder their ability to register new signings. Rashford\’s situation echoes that of Dani Olmo, another summer acquisition who only secured registration after the club exploited a regulatory workaround.
Sources suggest Rashford\’s move was plan B for Flick, who initially prioritized signing Spanish winger Nico Williams. That deal ultimately collapsed due to similar concerns about player registration under La Liga\’s strict salary cap and financial control measures.
With 138 goals in 426 appearances for Manchester United, Rashford was eager for a fresh start and reportedly bought into Flick’s vision for a rebuilt Barcelona side. However, unless the club can balance its books and make room for him within La Liga’s financial limits, Rashford’s official debut for Barça may be delayed, possibly indefinitely.
Barcelona still have time to resolve the issue before the season kicks off, but the clock is ticking fast.
