The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has strongly condemned the alleged killing of two Nigerian nationals in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
In a statement released on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, NICASA President Frank Onyekwelu expressed shock and deep sorrow over the deaths of Austin Amarachukwu, from Imo State, and Owolabi Ayotunde, from Lagos State, describing the incident as “brutal and senseless.”
While the exact circumstances surrounding the killings remain unclear at the time of reporting, Onyekwelu called on both the South African and Nigerian governments to launch a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“These cold-blooded killings must not be allowed to go unpunished,” he said. “These lives matter and their families deserve answers and closure.”
Onyekwelu urged Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm and law-abiding, acknowledging the grief and anger the tragedy has provoked. He also discouraged any retaliatory actions, emphasizing that lawful channels must be pursued.
According to NICASA, the Nigerian High Commission and Consulate are in active communication with law enforcement and other relevant authorities to support the victims\’ families and monitor the investigation.
“NICASA will continue to work with all levels of authority to protect the rights and lives of Nigerians in South Africa,” Onyekwelu assured, adding that the association is closely tracking the case through its KwaZulu-Natal chapter.
He concluded with a call for unity, justice, and the safety of Nigerians in the diaspora: “May the souls of Austin Amarachukwu and Owolabi Ayotunde rest in peace, and may their memories inspire us to seek justice and ensure the safety of our community.”
