The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed any chances of Peter Obi, the Labour Party\’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), calling such a move “too risky” for the former Anambra State governor.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Monday, July 28, 2025, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, a former Minister of Youth and Sports and one-time PDP chieftain, insisted that Obi remains a key player in the opposition coalition being led by the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Let me say clearly, Peter Obi is in the coalition,” Abdullahi said. “Regardless of what anybody is saying. But it is good to see that it has taken the coming on board of the ADC to get the PDP to begin to make some movements. But everyone knows the jugular of the PDP is in the hands of the ruling party. Peter Obi, more than anyone else, knows that he cannot take the risk of going to the PDP.”
His comments come amid reports that the PDP is trying to woo Obi back into its fold, a claim that ADC has now categorically refuted.
Meanwhile, Professor Jerry Gana, a founding member of the PDP and former Minister of Information, hailed Peter Obi as a beacon of hope and integrity in Nigerian politics. Speaking on Africa Independent Television (AIT), Gana described the former governor as a leader with the credibility and capacity needed to rebuild the country.
“Peter Obi is one of the finest leaders in this country,” Gana said. “He is disciplined, prudent, and deeply committed to the Nigerian project. He is a key voice for the future of democracy in this country, and we need people like him at the forefront of a united opposition.”
Gana also emphasized the urgency of forming a strong coalition of credible opposition figures, warning that no single party would be able to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 without a united front.
