Former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka has officially returned to the Premier League, signing with newly promoted Sunderland ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The Black Cats confirmed the signing of the Swiss international on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, via an official statement on their club website. The 32-year-old midfielder joins from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen on a three-year contract, with the transfer deal reportedly valued at £17.3 million, comprising an initial £13 million fee and up to £4.3 million in performance-based add-ons.

Xhaka’s move marks his return to English football two years after leaving Arsenal in 2023, where he played a key role during his seven-year tenure, making 297 appearances, scoring 23 goals, and providing 26 assists.

Speaking to the club’s media team, Xhaka shared his enthusiasm about joining Sunderland: “I am very proud to be here. When I spoke to the club, I was excited and I felt the energy and mentality that everyone has, it’s exactly what I wanted.”

He continued, “We are back to where this club needs to be, and we want to stay here to write our own history. I’m ready to help with my experience and quality.”

Last season with Bayer Leverkusen, Xhaka made 33 Bundesliga appearances, contributing two goals and seven assists, playing a vital role in the club’s midfield.

His arrival is expected to bring leadership, experience, and composure to a Sunderland side eager to cement their place in the top flight. The signing also signals the club’s intent to not just survive in the Premier League but compete.

Sunderland fans will be hopeful that Xhaka’s Premier League return provides the spark they need for a successful campaign.
