Police arraign notorious hitman on 11-count charge including murder

Notorious hitman

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a suspected notorious hitman, Wasiu Akinwande, popularly known as Olori Eso, before the Ogba Magistrate Court on an 11-count charge bordering on murder, unlawful possession of firearms, attempted murder, and felony.

The arraignment, which took place on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, follows Akinwande’s arrest during a covert tactical operation tagged “Silence, Speed, and Surprise” by the Command’s Tactical Squad. The operation was carried out at his hideout in Agbado, Ogun State, after he evaded multiple arrest attempts in Lagos.

Akinwande, 44, identified as one of Lagos State’s most wanted criminal suspects, is alleged to be the mastermind behind multiple violent killings and attacks in the Mushin axis of Lagos.

According to the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspect has long been on the radar of law enforcement agencies for orchestrating gang-related violence and extrajudicial killings. “He is popularly known as Olori Eso, a notorious figure in the criminal underworld who has been terrorizing Mushin and surrounding communities,” Hundeyin said in a statement to PUNCH Online.

Recovered from his residence were a large cache of weapons and incriminating items, including: two AK-47 rifles, one K2 assault rifle, two locally-made single-barrel pistols, 70 rounds of 5.56mm live ammunition, 27 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 57 cartridges, three walkie-talkies and a poisonous dagger

The police said Akinwande admitted to using these weapons for his criminal activities. The charges against him include the alleged murder of Bankole Yusuf and Ramadan Yusuf on July 31, 2024, and the killing of 10-year-old Aminat Lateef in 2010 in Fadeyi while she was running an errand.

One of the charges read: “That you, Wasiu Akinwande, alias Olori Eso, and others now at large, on or before the 31st of July 2024, did knowingly and unlawfully kill five individuals during a gang clash using AK-47 rifles, and thereafter absconded to Ogun State.”

Other counts include an alleged 2011 attempted murder of a 58-year-old woman, Awawu Ajalara, who was reportedly shot in both legs, leaving her permanently disabled.

Akinwande faces multiple charges under the Lagos State Criminal Law (2015) and the Firearms Act of the Federation (2004, as amended). The offences carry severe penalties, including life imprisonment and capital punishment.

The case has drawn significant public attention due to the scale of violence associated with the accused. The court is expected to fix a date for further proceedings as investigations continue.
