President Bola Tinubu has approved a series of strategic appointments to enhance governance and leadership across several federal universities in Nigeria.
Chisom Obih was appointed to the Governing Council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, filling a vacancy created by the recent passing of a council member.
In another notable appointment, Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye, a distinguished communications expert, has been named to the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State. Akinfeleye, the former Head of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, also chairs the Centre of Excellence in Multimedia and Cinematography as well as Unilag Radio 103.1 FM and Television. He replaces Mr. Wahab Owokoniran, who was recently appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Federal University of Transport, Daura, Katsina State. Akinfeleye previously served on the Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja.
Additionally, President Tinubu appointed Prof. Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai as the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara State. A retired Colonel of the Nigerian Army, Prof. Yakasai currently serves as the Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Bayero University, Kano. He is also chairman of the Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria and a member of the governing council at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.
Prof. Yakasai holds an MBBS degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and completed postgraduate studies in the UK on a European Economic Commission scholarship. He earned membership and fellowship from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, a Master’s in Medical Education from the University of Winchester, and fellowships from the International College of Surgeons (USA) and the American College of Surgeons. He has also served as Director-General of the Hospitals Management Board in Kano State.
Alongside Prof. Yakasai’s appointment, Mr. Hamisu Yusuf Yelwa was named Registrar, Usman Nakazalle Sanusi as Bursar, and Dr. Shehu Aminu Liman as Librarian of the Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe.
These appointments were announced in a press statement on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, by President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
