President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until August 2026.

Adeniyi, whose tenure was initially expected to end on August 31, 2025, will now continue in the role to consolidate key reforms initiated under the current administration.

This development was confirmed in a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

The extension, according to the statement, is intended to enable Adeniyi to push forward with major initiatives, including the modernisation of the Customs Service, the rollout of the National Single Window Project, and Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” Onanuga stated. “The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.”

Adeniyi was appointed as acting Comptroller-General in June 2023 and was officially confirmed in October 2023, succeeding former CG Hameed Ali.
