Lagos officials raise health concerns over contaminated borehole water in Lekki

The Lagos State Government has raised serious health concerns over the quality of water being consumed through boreholes in the Lekki axis, warning that some residents may unknowingly be exposed to contaminated water.

Speaking during a recent stakeholders\’ meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, Mahmood Adegbite, stated that untreated wastewater in the area could be infiltrating underground water sources.

“Everyone digging boreholes within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘contaminated water,’” Adegbite warned. He stressed the importance of proper wastewater treatment as a critical step toward protecting public health and preventing the outbreak of waterborne diseases.

He further disclosed that the state government has plans to introduce a comprehensive wastewater treatment system in Lekki to address this issue. “If we are able to treat all the wastewater within this axis, which we have plans for, we should be able to eradicate any form of disease that might result from the current situation,” he said.

Addressing the state’s broader environmental challenges, Adegbite also spoke on flooding, which continues to plague parts of Lagos despite significant government investment.

“Yesterday, it rained heavily, which is unusual because this is supposed to be the August break,” he said. “However, we are beginning to experience unusual weather patterns due to complex environmental issues. Despite the significant resources already committed, a lot still needs to be done to tackle flooding effectively.”

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to improving drainage infrastructure and promoting environmental sustainability to safeguard public health and protect residents from the effects of climate change.
