Public outcry as Ibom Air passenger remanded in Kirikiri sparks selective justice debate

Ibom Air passenger

The remand of Comfort Emmanson, a female passenger accused of assaulting Ibom Air crew and security officers during a Uyo–Lagos flight, has ignited nationwide debate over alleged selective justice in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Emmanson was captured in viral videos slapping and kicking airline and airport officials, including a female flight attendant, after allegedly refusing repeated instructions to switch off her phone before takeoff on Sunday, August 10, 2025. In one clip, she was forcibly removed from the aircraft by security personnel.

Ibom Air, in a statement, claimed the passenger attempted to use an onboard fire extinguisher to attack staff before being restrained. The airline confirmed it had filed a report with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and imposed a lifetime ban on Emmanson.

“Ibom Air has since submitted a report on the incident to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and placed a travel restriction on Ms. Emmanson, who will no longer be permitted to fly on any of our aircraft,” the statement read.

Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, confirmed on Monday, August 11, that Emmanson had been charged in court and remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

“All the more reason the flying public should be more careful, the unruly passenger on the Uyo–Lagos-bound Ibom Air, Miss Comfort Emmanson, has been charged to court, and she’s now cooling off in Kirikiri,” Moshood posted on X (formerly Twitter).

However, the incident has drawn backlash online, with many Nigerians accusing authorities of double standards. Critics compared the case to that of Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1 of K1 De Ultimate, who was accused of obstructing a ValueJet flight in Abuja last week but faced no legal consequences.

“Some animals are more equal than others. Nigeria is my country,” wrote X user @EmmyPromise71, expressing frustration over what they described as unequal application of the law.

Another user, @Ronaldnziroma, said, “KWAM 1 assaulted an air hostess and the pilot, blocked and impeded the plane, which is terrorism… and he is at home chilling. But this lady is in prison.”

Prominent political aide Paul Ibe also weighed in, questioning why KWAM 1 was not removed from the tarmac in the same manner as Emmanson. “Maybe it was because Comfort is not a friend of the president,” he wrote, adding that both incidents should be treated equally to deter future misconduct.

Similar calls for fairness spread across Facebook, with users insisting the same disciplinary measures be applied to the veteran singer.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has since issued a statement reminding all air travellers to comply with aviation safety rules and regulations, warning that violations would be met with appropriate sanctions.

The controversy continues to stir conversations about fairness and accountability in Nigeria’s aviation enforcement, as both the public and industry stakeholders await further action in the KWAM 1 case.
