In a significant move aimed at fostering financial independence and entrepreneurship among Nigerian youth, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially partnered with the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) to launch \”YouthCred,\” a groundbreaking loan scheme offering corps members access to credit facilities of up to ₦200,000.
The collaboration was formalized on Wednesday in Abuja with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two federal agencies. The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu\’s vision to expand consumer credit and support the economic aspirations of young Nigerians.
CREDICORP\’s Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Uzoma Nwagba, announced a staggering ₦9 billion has been earmarked for the initial phase of the scheme, exclusively targeting currently serving NYSC members. Nwagba emphasized that YouthCred is designed to be more than just a loan program. \”The heart of YouthCred is not just about granting loans, but about cultivating a culture of responsible borrowing and sound financial planning,\” he stated.
To qualify for the loans, which can be used for a variety of purposes including relocation expenses, work tools, vocational training, or small business ventures, corps members must first complete a mandatory digital credit education course.
This unique requirement shows the program\’s focus on building a foundation of financial literacy among its beneficiaries. Nwagba further explained that corps members who demonstrate good credit behavior by repaying smaller initial loans promptly will be eligible to access the full ₦200,000 facility.
NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, hailed the partnership as a \”milestone\” in the history of the corps. He commended President Tinubu for his support of the project, which he believes will be instrumental in strengthening corps members\’ financial independence and encouraging a new generation of entrepreneurs.
\”With YouthCred, our members now have a credible platform to turn their ideas into reality,\” Nafiu said. He highlighted that while many corps members possess innovative business ideas, they are often stymied by a lack of startup capital. The YouthCred scheme aims to bridge this gap, supporting national economic growth by empowering young people to become job creators rather than job seekers.
The NYSC Director-General pledged the corps\’ full commitment to ensuring the program\’s success, setting the stage for a new era of economic empowerment for thousands of young Nigerians embarking on their service year. The launch of YouthCred marks a promising step towards realizing the economic potential of Nigeria\’s youth and reinforcing a culture of responsible credit management.
